Full Description

Features relating to the use of St Vincent's House as an RAF headquarters during the Second World War were revealed in 2011-2, during a research project comprising geophysical survey and test pitting. The project was designed in large part to investigate the rumoured existence of an underground bunker, possibly used as an operations control room for bombing raids by 5 Bomber Group, famous for planning the Dambusters raids. No evidence for an underground bunker was revealed, and it was thought likely that all parts of the former operations room were above ground, in the area to the north-east of the tennis court, but have been removed since the end of the war. Various other features were revealed, however, including the remains of an air-raid trench, an emergency water supply, a concrete plinth for what may have been a radio mast, and several wall foundations and compacted surfaces for possible former structures. Small quantities of 20th century finds were recovered from most of the test pits; although largely representing modern detritus, this assemblage included some pieces that were clearly associated with the site's use in the Second World War, including fragments of a NAAFI white ceramic mug, strands of barbed wire and a military-green painted metal note or sign holder. {1}{2}
