Full Description

This war memorial was dedicated in 1920, and commemorates the First World War dead of Martin Dales which straddles Martin and Woodhall Spa parishes. The memorial stands in front of St Hugh's Church Hall on Martin Dales Drove. The memorial was originally situated further to the west, on the opposite side of Church Road, but was moved to its current location in around 1967 to accommodate the building of the new road bridge over the River Witham. The memorial was originally in the form of a stone pillar surmounted by a Latin cross, resting on a cubic plinth and a four step base. The cross was broken off the top in a storm sometime after 2000, however, so the memorial now resembles an obelisk. {1} The memorial was unveiled in March 1920 by Mrs E Crowden, who had also donated the site on which the memorial originally stood. It originally took the form of an elegant Latin cross in Portland stone, rising from a capital with flower moulding, on a tapering shaft. The cross shaft stands on a plinth, square in plan, with a four-stepped base (the lower level of which is made of concrete). The memorial commemorates ten members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. In 2015 the memorial was conserved with grant aid from the War Memorials Trust, and two years later further grant aid was given to reinstate the missing Latin cross-head.
