Full Description
Roman activity, in the form of a north to south aligned ditch and a possible pit or ditch terminus, was recorded in this location in August 2015, during trial trenching on land at Manor Farm, Newton on Trent. Significant quantities of Romano-British pottery, brick and tile, all probably dating from the 2nd century AD, were recovered from these features. All of the pottery sherds appeared to be of local grey ware fabrics, and included fragments from a wide-mouthed bowl and several large storage jars. Two of the tile fragments appeared to be pieces of Roman imbrex, whilst the third fragment was a piece of tegula with a pre-fired nail hole. Both features appeared to be broadly contemporary, although had distinct fills. Analysis of environmental samples taken from these fills recorded the presence of large amounts of carbonised plant remains, including spelt wheat and hulled 6-row barley, typical of the main cereal crops of this period. The presence of quantities of carbonised wheat chaff within the samples may indicate that the processing of these crops had occurred nearby, and may suggest the site was on the periphery of an area of settlement. {1}{2}
