Full Description

43 Main Street was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in June 2016, prior to its proposed demolition. The building is a former cottage of late 17th or early 18th century date, though it had been significantly altered on a number of occasions. The original structure was built of coursed limestone rubble, and was single-storey with an attic space in the steeply pitched thatch roof. This roof was raised in the late 19th century, using machine made red bricks to create a second storey that was roofed with red clay pantiles. A number of red brick lean-to's were also added to the main structure at this time. The interior of the building was much altered on several occasions, with very little of the original plan form and fittings surviving. All but one of the windows and doors were 20th century replacements. The building was demolished as soon as the recording work was completed. {1}
