Full Description

The remains of several former ditches were recorded in this location in September 2014, during trial trenching conducted to inform proposed residential development. The features comprised a broad, east to west aligned ditch, that cut a narrower, gully-like curvilinear feature, and a slightly curving south-east to north-west aligned ditch. Finds of shell-tempered late Iron Age pottery were recovered from the fills of these features, one of which was a rim and upper body sherd from a globular jar with an everted bead rim, similar in form to finds from other late Iron Age sites in the lower Nene Valley. The features were were thought to represent former boundary or drainage ditches, perhaps at the edge of former settlement. This idea was supported by the analysis of environmental samples taken from the fills of two of the ditches, that identified crop processing was being undertaken in the vicinity. The samples also indicated that the features underwent periods of temporary waterlogging, as would be expected by former boundary or drainage ditches. An assemblage of animal bone fragments was also recovered from these features, which, although small, appeared to be largely comprised of sheep/goat remains, with some cattle bones also being present. {1}{2}
