Full Description

The remains of a medieval cross base with a portion of shaft has been recorded at this location (TA 18085 06726). {1} The grid reference (to 10 figures suggesting accuracy) places it in Hermitage Wood (the name of which may be significant) within Riby Park. The location is well to the south of the village centre and it seems an unusual place for a medieval cross, suggesting it may have been relocated here from elsewhere. {2} No trace of the cross base could be found in August 2018, during a site visit conducted to inform possible felling works in Hermitage Wood. The cross base could not be found at or near the recorded position, although dense vegetation and ivy cover could have obscured any remains. It was noted that the recorded position for the cross base lies at the intersection of three paths through the wood, shown on historic Ordnance Survey maps and still in use today. This could support the idea that the cross was sited here as a garden feature of Riby Grove park, possibly in association with a former woodland hermitage or folly. {3}
