Description

A site visit was conducted to inform the proposed felling of part of Hermitage Wood, and the impact of this work on a medieval cross base, thought to be located within the wood. No trace of the cross base could be found at or near the recorded position, although dense vegetation and ivy cover could have obscured any remains. It was noted that the recorded position for the cross base lies at the intersection of three paths through the wood shown on historic Ordnance Survey maps, and still in use today. This could support the idea that the cross was sited here as a garden feature of Riby Grove park, possibly in association with a former woodland hermitage or folly. {1}
