Full Description

The remains of three ditches and a gully were recorded in this location in November 2015, during trial trenching conducted to inform proposed residential development. A small assemblage of Iron Age shell-gritted pottery was recovered from the fills of some of the features, suggesting a rough date for their creation. A small quantity of animal bone was also recovered, with the assemblage being largely comprised of the remains of cattle. Analysis of an environmental sample, taken from the fill of one of the ditches, indicated that it lay within an open, damp grassland area, and was either seasonally wet or semi-permanently filled with water. The low level of charred cereal grains recovered from the sample would also suggest that the ditch lay some distance from any potential settlement activity, and that the features rather represent attempts to manage the water levels of this area. {1}{2}
