Full Description
A large bog oak was recovered from a field drain in this location. Dendrochronological analysis of the timber showed an unusually large number of tree-rings, running from 489 BC to 126 BC. This date range was confirmed by radiocarbon analysis, and suggests that the tree died towards the end of the second century BC. Although an entirely natural feature, the investigation of this timber has helped to strengthen the dendrochronological record and provides a good regional comparison for other archaeological timbers. {1}
