Full Description

Large, concrete structure used to house a Second World War coast artillery searchlight. Formed part of the Boston Examination Battery (see MLI13376), and used to inspect suspect merchant ships approaching Boston. Roughly square shaped with a hexagonal eastern front. A small, concrete storeroom and crew shelter is to the rear of the searchlight structure, accessed by a flight of external stairs. The searchlight structure was converted to be used as a fuel store for the local farmer at some point after the end of the war. {1}{2}{3}{4} A photograph of the structure was taken in July 2007, during site visits conducted for the Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. The eastern embrasure has been blocked, and a door has been placed across the rear access. {5}
