Full Description
The churchyard at the Church of St Martin is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. The current church of St Martin dates from around 1762, but there has been a church on this site since at least the 14th century, and it is likely that the churchyard dates back to this period as well (see PRN 53448). {1}
A small quantity of disarticulated human bone was identified in March 2013, during the archaeological monitoring of drainage improvements at St Martin's Church, North Owersby. The bone fragments almost certainly derive from individuals buried in the graveyard surrounding the church, although an exact date for their deposition could not be determined. The remains were re-buried on site after their initial recording. A small assemblage of redeposited medieval pottery and tile was also recovered during the monitoring. The assemblage comprised two fragments of mid to late 12th century Lincoln Glazed Ware jugs, two fragments of 13th century Lincoln Glazed Ware jugs, a sherd from a 12th century Beverley Orange-type Ware jug and a fragment of mid 12th to 14th century roof tile. {2}{3}
