Full Description

This complex of former outbuildings was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in October 2014 to inform proposed residential development on land off Mill Lane, Legbourne. The structures date from the late 18th or early 19th century and comprise a probable former granary, stables and cartsheds. The buildings were originally arranged in a u-shaped plan around a central courtyard, although parts of the complex were demolished in the later 20th century, leaving separate eastern, northern and western ranges, connected by short lengths of walling. The buildings are all built of brick, predominantly laid in English Garden Wall bond, and feature pitched roofs of ceramic tiles. Some alterations to the buildings have been made, particularly to the northern range. The eastern range is of two storeys and likely functioned as a former granary. Entrances on the southern elevation gave access to the ground floor and to the first floor via a brick staircase. The western elevation is partially open-fronted at the ground floor, suggesting the northern part was possibly used as a cart store. Pitching holes to the first floor storage area are to the western elevation, although this part of the building has seen some alterations, with the roof being lowered and the original pitching holes being reduced in size. The northern range is single-storey and appears to have functioned as a stable. The southern elevation has two central entrances with rough brick arches and stable doors. The building has been the subject of recent renovations works, with the southern elevation being re-built and the internal walls being plastered throughout. The western range is single-storey and is open-fronted to the east, indicating its likely former use as a cart shed. The southern part of the range was very overgrown at the time of the survey and little detailed recording could be conducted, although the use of bullnose bricks was noted to the corners of the southern elevation. {1}{2}
