Full Description

Two possible buried kilns were identified in this location in November 2007, during a magnetometry survey conducted as part of a community archaeology group research project. The features were identified as two discrete sites of strong magnetic variation, indicative of areas subjected to intense heat, and possibly indicating some form of industrial acitivity. {1} A programme of field walking was also conducted as part of the same research project, and identified a large quantity of medieval tile waste in this area. The assemblage included fragments of decorated floor tiles and vessels in a variety of tile fabrics, all thought to date to the late 13th to 14th century. The waste would seem to support the idea of medieval industrial activity in this area, possibly associated with adjacent remains of Washingborough Grange. {2}
