Full Description

Corby Glen war memorial is situated on the green, at the eastern end of the village. It was dedicated in 1920, to commemorate the fallen of the First World War and the Second World War. The Cornish grey granite memorial stands at over 10ft (3m) high. It was designed as a replica of the 8th century St Martin's Celtic cross on the isle of Iona. {1} This memorial takes the form of an accomplished and well-realised granite cross, with a Celtic wheel-head on a tapered shaft. It sits on a tapered, rectangular base and plinth, and is encircled by an iron fence. The memorial was unveiled on 13 December 1920. It commemorates twenty four members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Following the Second World War an additional dedication was added to commemorate the three local men who fell in that conflict. A further dedication was added to commemorate the loss of a man in the Malaya campaign of 1956.
