Full Description
The former granary and cart shed at Heckington Mill was included in a programme of historic building recording, conducted in February 2014 to inform proposed renovation and renewal works at the site. The structure is single-storey, and comprises a central granary building , thought to have been built during the c.1891 repairs to the adjacent tower mill, with a probably slightly later cart shed attached to the east, and a late 20th century office structure to the south-west. The building is constructed of brick, generally laid in Flemish Garden wall bond, though with some more recent elevations in modern stretcher bond, and features a pitched corrugated cement fibre roof. The structure would likely have functioned as a combination granary and cart shed until the mill ceased to operate in 1941. The buildings are now largely used for storage, and whilst the former granary structrue is largely in relatively good condition, the former cart shed part is in much poorer condition, with some walls having partly collapsed. {1}{2}
A second phase of historic building recording was conducted in October 2016, during the demolition of the former cart shed part of the structure. This part of the structure was single-storey and built of brick, though had been subject to considerable alterations in the mid 20th century. It had featured a mono-pitched roof covered by corrugated cement fbre at the time of demolition. The removal of the structure allowed parts of the adjacent mill tower foundations to be recorded (see MLI82961). {3}{4}
