Full Description

The complex of farm buildings at Apley Manor Farm were the subject of detailed building recording, conducted in July 2015, prior to their proposed conversion to housing. This part of the complex comprises a two-storey combination cart shed and granary, with a range of single-storey cattle sheds to the west. All of these structures were built of red brick, laid in an English Garden Wall bond, and featured pantile roofs, although the tiles are no longer extant. The structures date to the mid 19th century, and were constructed as part of the Victorian 'High Farming' movement, though interestingly not in the usual planned farm layout. The structures are arranged in an L-shaped plan form, with the two-storey cart shed and granary aligned on a north to south axis, and the range of cattle shelters extending to the west. The cattle shelters were open fronted to the south, allowing access into a former crew yard, which was enclosed by a brick wall until approximately the mid 20th century, when a large modern shed was built in its place. The cart shed featured large cart doors to its eastern elevation, and a brick and stone staircase to the southern gable gave access to the first floor granary. Some modern alterations were made to the buildings including the installation of large metal sliding doors to the cart shed. A collection of probably medieval stone architectural fragments was stored in the cart shed building; these fragments had been collected from around Apley village by the present owner. The collection was largely comprised of moulded architectural pieces, with one exhibiting carved foliage detail. Their exact provenance was unclear, though they may be related to the other fragments that were incorporated into the construction of the adjacent former farmhouse (see PRN 56539), thought to have originated from Barlings Abbey, although the owner believed that some may be associated with Bullington Priory. {1}{2}
