Full Description

Bardney war memorial is a polished red Aberdeen granite square column on a double plinth surmounted with a Hospitallers' cross. The memorial was dedicated in 1920 having been built by Mr Jesse Boulton and designed by Charles Edward Marks. A fence was erected around it later that same year. It was originally erected to commemorate those who fought in the First World War but names of Second World War soldiers have been added. {1} First World War memorial, designed by local builder Charles Edward Marks and unveiled on 19 January 1920. It is an elegant and striking cross in polished red Aberdeen granite sited within its contemporary enclosure with decorative, ornate, low, wrought-iron railings. The choice of the Knights Hospitallers cross for the memorial may have been influenced by its visual relationship to the nearby Peter Hancock’s Hospital former almshouses. The memorial commemorates the 123 local servicemen who served in the First World War and returned as well as the 26 who fell. The fenced surround was added later that year. After the Second World War, the names of 14 local servicemen, seven who fell and seven who returned, are commemorated from that conflict.
