Description
Eleven trial trenches were excavated prior to residential development. Early and late Saxon deposits were discovered as well as post medieval remains. {1}{2}
Eleven trial trenches were excavated by PCA prior to residential development. Late Anglo-Saxon features of mainly tenth- to eleventh-century date were uncovered. The features consisted of pits, post holes and ditches. A stone wall in the same area may also be of similar date. The finds were of a domestic nature and include pottery and animal bone. Residual medieval pottery of the eleventh to fifteenth centuries was recovered as well. The remains of eighteenth- to nineteenth-century structures including brick cellars and wells were encountered and these could have continued in use until the early or mid twentieth century.
