Description

During the Bain Valley Survey, an extensive flint scatter was located adjacent to the River Bain in Tattershall Thorpe. As this field was due to be quarried, an excavation was mounted in the spring of 1981. An area of 400m² was hand-excavated to see if structures could be located, and to test the degree of preservation of Neolithic features. The findings (pits and postholes) led to the stripping of 4725m² in the winter of the same year, of which 1800m² were fully excavated. Severe weather conditions prevented the full investigation of the remaining area, but it became apparent that many of the pits were in fact periglacial features. The main excavation was frozen and a series of trenches were placed adjacent to the river for environmental sampling. {1}{2}{3}{4} See also Event LI88.
