Description

An archaeological excavation was undertaken in two areas, one sited over a barrow mound, the other over an artefact scatter, as part of the Fenland Management Project. Preliminary excavation of the barrow mound took the form of a 1.5m wide trench extending for 18m alongside a north/south baulk from the southern ditch section, undertaken in 0.1m spits through the mound and underlying paleosol. The remaining 60m squared of mound to be investigated was machine stripped. For the artefact scatter site, 480m squared was machine stripped to the level where features could be defined, and a sub-sampling policy was initiated. Additional machine stripping of 2m wide trenches east and west of the exposed area of excavation took place after a magnetometry survey.{1}
