Description

Trial trenching was undertaken as part of a programme of evaluation prior to proposed building works. Seven trenches were excavated: - Trenches 1 to 5 were placed over possible archaeological anomalies identified by prior geophysical survey; Trench 6 was placed over an anomaly thought to represent the platform at the northern end of the aqueduct - eastward and westward extensions were excavated to assess the wider area and expose more of the platform base, and a further extension was made at right angles to the original eastward extension to facilitate interpretation of the function of a set of probable Romano-British ditch features. Trench 7 was intended to locate evidence of features associated with crop- and soilmarks at the south-eastern boundary of the site. Trenches 1 to 4 and Trench 7 were generally devoid of archaeological deposits, but subsequent work in Trench 6 suggests that a weak and poorly-defined anomaly in Trench 1 may represent the fill of a hollow forming the line of a metalled track.{1}
