Description

A fluxgate gradiometer survey was conducted to inform proposed residential development on land off Barbers Drove, Crowland. Strong magnetic anomalies, clearly relating to modern activity and disturbance, obscured large parts of the site. Two groups of discrete magnetic anomalies were identified, however, which may possibly represent the remains of former pit-like features of unknown date. A series of east to west aligned, parallel, linear magnetic anomalies were also recorded, and were thought to represent the remains of former ploughing or drainage features. {1}{2} Subsequent trial trenching in this area resolved the pit-like anomalies as being of modern origin, but confirmed the presence of the linear anomalies, which were thought to represent medieval or pre-Enclosure drainage features (see ELI12811).
