Description

Three trial trenches were excavated on land at Holland House, Spalding, to inform the demolition of the former Inland Revenue building and the proposed construction of a new residential development. A possible Medieval buried topsoil and pit were encountered. These were sealed by alluvial silts suggetive of regular flooding. Several pits of Late Medieval or early post-Medieval date were also recorded. All of the identified features were sealed by a complex sequence of later post-Medieval dumped deposits, demolition material and wall foundation trenches. Finds recovered include Medieval and post-Medieval pottery and an assemblage of 17th-19th century clay pipe bowls and stems. {1}{2}
