Description

A historic building survey was undertaken at Wherry's Mill, Burghley Street, Bourne, prior to its conversion to residential use. The surveyed building is four storeys tall, brick built in English Bond, with a low-pitched hipped slate roof. Its long elevations have symmetrical openings, with mostly blank short elevations. Internally, part of the original winch mechanism, once connected to a lucam used to hoist goods through an opening in the west elevation, survives. Alterations to the east (rear) elevation include the blocking of several window openings and the construction of a new external staircase to a widened first floor entry. The date of construction for the building is estimated to be pre-1850, probably in the early 19th century. One of the tie beams in the roof is etched with 'Arabic style' carpenter's marks. {1}
