Description

A geophysical survey was conducted on land at Anchor Lane, Ingoldmells, to inform the proposed construction of a new housing development. Significant magnetic disturbance associated with the construction of a nearby housing estate was encountered across the site, and a number of palaeochannels or silted former tidal creeks were noted. An area of possible industrial activity was identified at the northern end of one of these channels, and a small grouping of rectilinear and pit-like anomalies was recorded at the northeastern edge of the site. {1} Subsequent trial trenching on the same site in July 2014 revealed the possible industrial site to be a large spread of Late Iron Age/Romano-British briquetage, with a nearby clay layer containing further deposits of briquetage and shell. The possible features in the northeast of the site were confirmed to be Medieval in date and are likely related to agricultural or domestic activity.
