Description
A magnetometry geophysical survey east of Spilsby as part of the planning requirements for residential development (including associated infrastructure and green space) was undertaken in May 2015. In addition to the piecemeal ridge and furrow observed across the site, two areas of particular interest were identified, a possible Iron Age or Roman enclosure system in the south of the site, and an area of pitting and ditches in the west. {1}{2}
Excavations undertaken in 2020 largely supported the interpretations of the geophysical survey, the enclosure system was broadly dated to the Iron Age (although a quantity of Bronze Age material was also recovered), and the area of pitting and ditches contained a large quantity of 12th century pottery. {3}{4}
