Description

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken between 02/11/2011 and 04/11/2011 at Star Lane/Broad Street Stamford as part of the planning conditions for a mixed residential and commercial development. The site was stripped and two evaluation trenches were dug revealing evidence for early medieval ferrous metal working. The trench in the northwest of the site recorded a large undated feature interpreted as a ditch or quarry, and two pits one of which included iron melting slag, smithing slag, a crucible fragment, and part of a plano-convex hearth feature which was stratigraphically below a clay layer containing 10th and 11th century pottery. The trench in the southeast of the site recorded a ditch, the fill of which also included iron melting slag. 10th and 11th century pottery was found througout the site. {1}{2}
