Description

A programme of archaeological excavation was conducted on land to the south of Witham Road, Woodhall Spa, to preserve by record features identified during previous evaluation work, prior to the construction of a residential development. Modern land drains and plough scarring were noted across the site, which trunctated a number of archaeological features. A group of pits or postholes forming a possible structure and the remains of a round house with an irregular penanular drip gully and two inner postholes were encountered. A single sherd of 12th-13th century pottery was recovered from the terminus of the drip gully, though given the level of modern truncation this is likely intrusive. An enclosure ditch running north to south, turning west at its northern end, was also encountered to the north of these features. Prior trial trenching (see ELI14129) recovered Late Iron Age pottery from both the enclosure ditch and the drip gully of the round house. {1}{2}
