A fluxgate gradiometer survey was conducted on land to the east of Linwood Road, Market Rasen. Readings suggesting the remains of possible industrial archaeology were noted across the whole site. A central linear band of stronger magnetic response was interpeted as a modern feature, likely obscuring other features. Residual traces of ridge and furrow were also noted in the western half of the survey area. {1} A subsequent programme of trial trenching on the same site (see ELI14064) confirmed the presence of Roman-era industrial activity including iron smelting on the site. Many features revealed by the trial trenching were not identified by the survey, most likely due to their being obscured by a buried soil containing significant quantities of iron slag.
