Description

A magnetometry survey was conducted to inform the proposed construction of a new residential estate in two fields on land off Lincoln Road, Ruskington. Seven linear anomalies were identified in the northern field; one aligned closely with a pre-1888 field boundary seen on historic mapping (this was also present in the southern field), while the others were interpreted as representing agricultural features, possibly post-medieval or modern land drains. These possible drains had three distinct orientations, suggesting three different phases of drainage works. {1} Subsequent trial trenching on this site (see ELI13953) confirmed the existence of the field drains identified by the magnetometry. East-west aligned possible medieval or post-medieval furrows were also excavated, which matched the geophysical anomalies ascribed to agricultural trends in the survey. For the magnetometry survey of the southern field, see ELI13952.
