Description

A historic building survey was undertaken prior to the alteration of the Grade II Listed stable block at Adderley House in Long Sutton for residential use. The surveyed building was a two storey northeast to southwest aligned stable and coach house of handmade red brick in Flemish Bond, under a pitched gabled roof. The southeast elevation has three brick arched doorways, one single door at each end of the elevation, and a large double door coach opening in the centre, flanked by window openings. Both the northeast and southwest gables have former loft openings to the first floor granary. This building is suggested to have been constructed in the late 18th century at the same time as Adderley House. A later single storey lean-to brick extension formerly abutted the southwest end of the northwest elevation, though this had been demolished prior to the survey. It had a single chimney in the centre of the pitch, and may have functioned as a tack room. A straight join connected this extension to the main building. {1}{2}
