Description

A magnetometry survey was undertaken to inform proposed development on land at Hall Gate, Holbeach. Several linear magnetic anomalies were recorded in the north of the site. They are on a different alignment to the current field system, and may be indicative of an earlier field arrangement. Ten possible rubble filled features were also recorded to the east of Manor Farm, and may suggest the location of a demolished building or earlier features. {1}{2} Subsequent trial trenching (ELI14739) revealed the presence of a Late Saxon to Early Medieval salt-working site in the northeast of the site, to the east of Manor Farm. No rubble-filled features were encountered, though the magnetometry results may be explained by the recovered fired clay fragments associated with the salt-making process.
