Description

TF 16 SW HOLTON CUM BECKERING MAIN STREET 5/9 Holton Hall 30.11.66 II Small country house. Early C18 with major late C18 alterations and additions. Stuccoed brickwork with hipped sate roofs having lead and tile dressings. Originally a square plan of 3 by 3 bays extended later by the addition of projecting bays to front and rear and an extra bay of building on the left hand side. The 3 wall stacks all date from the late C18 replanning. Two storey with attic front having first floor band and plain eaves course. 4 bays, the end bays projecting, with a bowed end to the left and a wider facetted bay to the right. The bays project through both floors. The central C19 half glazed double door has a blank overlight with to right a single glazing bar sash and to left a small square light. In the bays to either side are single glazing bar sashes with semi-circular fanlight heads. The left hand bay also has single glazing bar sashes to the facetted side walls. The first floor has 6 glazing bar sashes and a small reset C19 sliding sash. In the roof are 3 fixed light glazing bar dormers. Interior. The hall has a late C18 elliptical arch and above this is set a C16 plaster panel in high relief of Orpheus in the Underworld. The dog leg stair has carved string, plain balusters, moulded pearwood handrail and fluted newels. There are 2 late C18 marble fireplaces and all original doors retain late C18 architraves and panels. The principal rooms have moulded cornices. Evidence for the original square plan is provided by variation in the brickwork between the earlier and later parts, the presence of a first floor band in the side wall of the existing service range, formerly an external feature, and variations in the ridge height and roof timbers internally.
