Description

SK 98 SE HACKTHORN HALL DRIVE 1/14 Church of 30.11.66 St. Michael G.V. lI* Parish church. Cl2 and 1849 rebuilding by Mr. Mainwaring. Squared limestone rubble and ashlar with slate roofs having stone coped gables with kneelers and crosses fleury. Western tower, nave, north aisle and porch, vestry and chancel. The 4 stage ashlar tower in C14 style has a deep moulded plinth, 3 moulded string courses and a battlemented parapet with pierced quatrefoil and lozenge panels, 8 crocketed pinnacles and 8 gargoyles in the form of griffins and lions. The angle buttresses rise to full height and are decorated with minor griffins at their gables. To each face at belfry stage are 2 light openings, with ogee heads, hood moulds and human head label stops. On the south side are single lights to each stage. At the west side is a full width porch with a central 4 centred arched opening with shields in spandrels, flanked by 3 panels of C15 style decoration and topped by a battlemented parapet with pierced decoration matching that on the tower. The west doorway is in a late C12 style, re-usinq some original work. It has a semi-circular arch of 2 orders with hobnail and zigzag decoration, pairs of nook shafts and a decorated hood mould with beast head label stops. Above are 2 light windows to first and second stages and a single light to third stage. The north aisle embraces the tower and on the north side of the tower is a single light to third stage. The nave, aisle and chancel are in squared coursed rubble with moulded plinth and decorated corbel table of human heads. The north aisle 2 light west window is in C16 style and on the north side are single 3 and 2 light windows in the same style. The north porch has a pointed headed opening. The inner doorway is in late C12 style, of 3 orders with different forms of zigzag decoration. The elaborately carved capitals are original C12 work and set on pairs of nook shafts. The clerestory consists of 3 small paired lights. The vestry has a 2 light window and pointed doorway. The chancel has a single 2 light Y tracery style window to north side and 2 similar ones to south side. The east 3 light window is in a C15 style. The southside of the nave has 3 C19 3 light windows between stepped buttresses. Interior. The 3 bay C19 arcade has octagonal piers and double chamfered pointed arches. The chancel arch has semi-circular responds and a double chamfered arch with trefoil and panel decoration above. At the west end is a fine carved gallery and screen. On the tower west wall is a triple blank arch, the central one contains a plaster coat of arms. The nave roof is arch braced with carved lining panels. The rear arches of all windows and doors have hood moulds with label stops and the nave roof has angel corbels, the aisle has human head corbels. All fittings including finely carved altar rail, reredos, pulpit and readers desk are contemporary with the rebuilding. The octagonal font is also C19. In the north aisle is a funeral hatchment and the chancel has a fine C19 brass chandelier. Monuments. In the chancel a large wall slabin pietra dura by J. Darmanin & Sons of Malta to Augusta Amcotts d.1857, portrays a standing angel holding a bible in an architectural surround. The church was rebuilt and designed by the lay rector of Hackthorn. The earlier church is shown in the Banks Collection and a blocked C12 arch is clearly visible on the south side. Listing NGR: SK9910482361
