Description

SK 97 NE RISEHOLME off RISEHOLME LANE 4/61 Stable Block and Wall at Riseholme Hall G.V. II Stable block, wall and piers. Now used for storage and flat. C18 altered 1840 by William Railton, and C20 alterations. Squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings. Slate roof with one brick ridge stack and concrete tiled roofs to lower ranges, yellow brick wall. Courtyard plan. Main block of 2 storeys and 5 bays, central bay advanced and open pedimented, crowned with square clock tower. Ground floor sill band and slightly overhanging eaves. Central semi-circular headed opening with splayed and cogged surround having vermiculated keystone, flanked by pairs of semi-circular lights with cast iron tracery and cogged surrounds. To first floor a central planked doorway in plain stone surround is flanked by pairs of plain sashes with pointed stone surrounds. Square ashlar tower rising from rusticated base, with angle pilasters supporting a modillioned cornice, pyramidal slate roof and bronze weather cane. In the tower side wall towards the courtyard is a clock face with plain stone surround, beneath which is a stone panel with intersecting circular decoration. To left and right are lower single storey ranges at right angles, that to right containing 4 large carriaqe double doors, and that to left a central loorway with semi- circular overlight with cogged head, to right a glazing bar sash and to left double doors. The fourth element of the courtyard is a yellow brick wall with ashlar gate piers to either side of central opening and terminating in similar piers. All piers have pyramidal caps.
