Description

TF 19 NE THORESWAY MAIN STREET (south side) 4/58 Church of St Mary 1.11.66. II Parish Church. C12, C13, mostly rebuilt 1879-86 by James Fowler. Coursed ironstone rubble, limestone ashlar dressings, slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles, wooden bell turret. Bell turret, nave with north and south aisles, north porch, rectangular chancel, north vestry. C19 west front, re-using part of C12 tower arch. Ashlar dressed plinth, 2 stage buttresses where the aisles meet the main vessel and C12 central round headed blind archway with large impost blocks with inserted, round headed lights. Above, an oculus set within a small blind round headed opening, and hoodmould. Coped gable above, with finial. West front of aisles flush with main vessel, each with single pointed light set within ornate cusped and finialled ogee moulding. Wooden bell turret with pyramidal roof with weathervane. West side of C19 north porch has moulded plinth and eaves, a round headed light and clasping buttress. Round headed doorway to north with rectangular jambs, grooved imposts and limestone hoodmould. Coped gable with finial above. East corner clasped by buttress. East side of porch has moulded plinth, eaves and single round headed light. Porch interior flanked by stone benches with late C12 round headed double chamfered doorway with inner rectangular jambs and outer C19 circular jambs with shaft rings, moulded bases and stiff leaf capitals. Plank door. North aisle proper has ashlar dressed plinth with rectangular window of 2 cusped ogee lights with hoodmould. 2 stage buttress to east with rectangular window of 3 cusped ogee lights and with hoodmould beyond. 2 stage buttress to east. Low plain clerestorey with tall ashlar chimney to east on rubble plinth. North side of vestry has ashlar dressed plinth and eaves and a rectangular window with 2 Caernarvon headed lights. East end of vestry has pointed doorway with hoodmould and plank door. Angle buttress on north east corner of 2 stages. Ashlar dressed plinth continues round C19 chancel. East end has stringcourse that rises to run beneath pointed 3 light east window with hoodmould and head and floral label stops. Coped gable with finial above. 2 stage angle buttress on south east corner. Stringcourse runs under south aisle window of 2 pointed lights with hoodmould and label stops, 2 stage buttress to west with another similar window beyond. Nave's south aisle has moulded plinth and eaves, and 3 rectangular windows, that to east of 4 cusped ogee lights, the 2 to the west, each of 2 cusped ogee lights, all with hoodmoulds. Windows alternate with 2 stage buttresses. Plain, low clerestorey. Interior west end has blocked remnants of C12 round headed tower arch with large imposts. Late C13 north and south arcades each of 3 bays with double chamfered pointed arches, octagonal piers and polygonal responds with octagonal capitals. Some bases and plinths by Fowler. C13 chancel arch heavily restored in C19. Bases and first few feet of polygonal responds are C13 the remainder with beaded capitals, C19. C13 double chamfered pointed arch above. to contain organ, with small door to vestry beyond with hoodmould running into that of arch to west. Further east, a cusped aumbry with hoodmould. South side of chancel has seat set into wall under south-east window. East window flanked internally by nook shafts to with stiff leaf capitals, hoodmould and head label stops. C19 roofs, and encaustic tiles throughout. C19 pulpits, lecturn and pews. 2 C19 monuments. C12 octagonal stone font with quatrefoils scored on octagonal support. 3 re-set C14 gravestones, 2 decorated with ornate crosses, in north aisle of nave. Listing NGR: TF1666296638
