Description

HIGH STREET 1. 1146 (West Side) George Hotel SK 9135 NW 8/45 8.5.50 II* GV 2. 1780. 3-storey, brick with parapet; slate roof; stone plinth and bands at 1st floor and below 1st floor wmdows; narrow pseudo entablature with triglyph below parapet; 7 windows, glazing bars, both end bays project slightly with semi-circular arched recess to which tile windows are each of 3 lights; central rusticated stone carriageway (now filled in to form main entrance doorway) with semi-elliptical arch surmounted by cornice and with keystone dated 1780. Fireplaces and "Adam" decoration on stairs. Also circular window with tracery of the period. Mentioned in "Nicholas Nickleby". Cellars may contain traces of medieval inn. The George Hotel and Nos. 62 to 70 (consec form a group. Listing NGR: SK9137235876
