Description

SK 99 SE SNITTERBY MOOR ROAD Church of 3/42 St. Nicholas 1.11.66 II Parish church. 1866 by James Fowler. Coursed and rock faced limestone rubble, stone slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles, stone coped gables with crosses fleury. Western tower, nave, apsidal chancel, south porch, vestry. Although largely rebuilt in C19 the lower 2 stages of the tower are in coursed limestone rubble and appear to be in medieval masonry. The 3 stage tower with plinth and moulded string course rises to battlemented parapet with angle pinnacles. On the south side is a stair turret. The west wall contains a 2 light window. The belfry stage has double lights to each face. The north wall of the nave has 2 paired lights. The chancel apse has 3 lancets at the east end and a 4th lancet in the south side. The south wall of the nave is as the north side, but the windows are slightly larger. The gabled south porch has a moulded doorway in the Early English style. Interior; the inside walls are in red brick with ashlar and black brick horizontal bands. The chancel and other arches have vary-coloured brick voussoirs. The brick and stone cancellae screen wall has a built in ashlar and marble lectern. All the fittings are contemporary. Listing NGR: SK9857494696
