SK 94 NW HOUGH-ON-THE-HILL BRANDON CHAPEL LANE (north side) 3/100 Chapel (Formerly listed 20-9-66 as Church) G.V. II* Chapel of ease. Early C12, late C12, C14, C15, 1872 by Kirk of Sleaford. Coursed ironstone, rubble, limestone ashlar, and dressings, plaintile roofs with stone coped east gable with C19 finial and porch gable with C19 finial. Bell turret, nave and chancel in one, incipient north aisle, south porch. West front of coursed ironstone rubble with ashlar bands, C19 pointed window of 2 lights and oculus containing trefoil, flanking angle buttresses of 2 stages and C19 bell turret with 2 trefoil headed openings for bells and coped gable. West side of north aisle of rough early C12 rubble with rough quoins. North side of aisle wall of C19 ironstone with ashlar bands. Choir's north wall steps back a little from nave aisle of C12 coursed rubble with fragmentary C12 string course. C19 angle buttresses of 2 stages. East end has C12 plinth and stringcourse with C15 east window of 3 lights with perpendicular tracery. South-east angle buttresses of 2 stages. Very thick leaning ironstone rubble C12 south wall. Plinth and moulded stringcourse runs under 2 light pointed window with C19 tracery with 3 stage buttress beyond. Nave has C15 rectangular window to east of 3 cusped lights with trefoils above, and C19 hood mould. C19, 3 light rectangular window inserted to west with C19 round headed light and a plain pilaster buttress be yond C19 south porch with 3-centred arch and columnar jambs with scalloped decorated capitals, flanked by squat buttresses. South doorway has early C12 chip star decorated lintel and tympanum with C19 door. Interior, C12 north arcade of 2 bays with round pier and polygonal responds supporting the roof. East respond has beaded abacus they all have plain moulded capitals. In chancel 2 polygonal responds on north side carry C19 beam supporting roof. In east wall of narrow chancel aisle is C14 niche with ogee arch and gable with cusping, crockets, finial and grotesque heads. Plain aumbry in east wall to south of altar. Aumbry in south wall. C19 tiled floor, pews and pulpit. Early C12 circular stone font without ornament. Listing NGR: SK9034448133
