Description

ASHBY DE LE LAUNDE MAIN STREET: Ashby TF 05 NE AND BLOXHOLM (north side) 2/8 Stable block to the north of Ashby Hall GV II Stable block. 1836. Coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, fishscale tile roofs, with moulded coped gables and kneelers. A single external gable chimney with a pair of square moulded ashlar stacks, and a single gable chimney with an octagonal white brick stack. Ashlar quoins and plinth. Quadrangle plan. Single storey plus attic. West front has projecting gabled gateway to south with central 4 centred arched, archway with hood, and above a 3 light mullion window with central light extending upwards, in chamfered surround with Tudor hood. To the left a single diagonal buttress with set-offs, surmounted by an ornate square finial, to the right an octagonal, 3 storey corner turret, with bands and a parapet, plus a single light window on the first floor and a small lancet above. To the north are 4 narrow fixed lights in chamfered surrounds, then a pair of 2 light chamfered mullion windows either side of the central external stack. Beyond another lower 2 light chamfered mullion window with hood, and beyond again the north gable has a pair of small 2 light casements in chamfered surrounds. Inside the courtyard the west facade has a central 4 centred arched doorway, with panel door, flanked by single light windows in chamfered surrounds, all with hoods. Either side are pairs of large fair centred arched doorways, with double panel doors. To the left a four centred arched archway, and to the right a 4 centred arched gateway, with panel door. Above the central gable has a 3 light chamfered mullion window, with the central light extending upwards, with Tudor hood. The flanking gables have single light windows in chamfered surrounds. The 5 bay north facade has a central 4 centred arched, archway flanked by diagonal buttresses and then pairs of 2 light, chamfered mullion windows, with hoods. Above a central circular plaque with a hood, central gable is stepped and topped by a small lancet with its own gable. The flanking gables have single light windows in chamfered surrounds. The 7-bay south facade, has a central 2 storey, 3 bay gateway, with a central 4 centred arched gate with double, panel doors and a Tudor hood, flanked by 2 light chamfered mullion windows with hoods. Above a central protruding stack, with a coat of arms, this stack rises through the central stepped gable, and is now capped. Either side of the gateway are single storey wings with a pair of 2- light chamfered mullion windows. In the north west corner of the courtyard, is a postillion block inscribed "J W K 1836."
