HARLAXTON SK8932 GRANTHAM ROAD 1315-0/15/164 (East side (off)) 19/02/52 Forecourt gateway and screen at Harlaxton Manor (Formerly Listed as: GRANTHAM ROAD Harlaxton Manor and gateway) GV I Forecourt gateway and screen. c1840-1854. Probably by Gregory Gregory in collaboration with William Burn and David Bryce. Ashlar, with bronze sculptures added c1938. Combination of Jacobean and Baroque Revival styles. Central gateway with double wrought-iron gates. On each side, a square lodge with plinth and heavy plain cornice, pierced by a heavily rusticated round arched doorway with wrought-iron gate, and topped with a corniced cruciform pedestal on a stepped base. Beyond, larger square lodges, 2 stages, with elaborate strapwork angle pilasters and, above a cornice, diagonally set pedestals topped with volutes, supporting a sarcophagus and a bronze lion with prey. On the lower stage, a round opening, and on the upper stage a square one, with projecting surrounds. Inner faces have doorways with round openings above. Beyond, screen walls with curved central section. Plinth, round arched arcade, square pedestals, amd moulded coping. A major architectural element of Harlaxton Manor, notable for the innovatory use of Jacobean Revival style in combination with Baroque.
