Description

TF 17 NE 1/2 BAUMBER LAKESIDE Brick kiln at the Anchorage II Incorrectly shown as Brickyard Farm on OS map. Brick kiln; Scotch type. c1800 with minor C20 alterations. Red brick. Rectangular on plan. Single storey with battered side walls and buttresses, having 8 flues to each side. The left hand end has a wide C20 opening, probably an enlargement of the original access, with a pent corrugated iron roof. This opening is flanked by 2 original battered buttresses. The interior has a slightly pointed brick vault with narrow vent slots, arranged in 8 pairs, between the flues in the sides but at a higher level. To the apex of the vault are 9 small square ventilator holes. Apart from the enlarged opening and cracking due to thermal stress of the side walls, the structure is in good order and represents an unusually complete survival of a once common building type. The original brick pits can be seen to the east of the kiln. A brick kiln is shown on the OS map of 1806. Listing NGR: TF1951475217
