THORPE ST.PETER CHURCH LANE TF 46 SE (north side) 4/62 Church of St. Peter 3.2.67 G.V. I Parish church. c.1200, late C13, C14, C15, C16, restored C19. Greenstone and limestone rubble, limestone ashlar. Lead roofs with stone coped gables and eastern cross finial. West tower, nave with north and south aisles, south porch and clerestory, chancel. Mid C14 west tower with moulded plinth, moulded string courses defining the 3 stages; 3 stage angle buttresses. Pointed west window with 3 ogee headed lights, early flowing tracery, hood mould running into flanking string course and head label stops. Small, cusped ogee headed light above with a similar window on the south side. Bell stage with ornate niches set in corners. Bell openings in all 4 sides, each with a pointed head, 2 cusped ogee headed lights, cusped mouchettes, hood moulds and label stops. Moulded eaves, parapet and ornate pinnacles. North aisle with plinth. West end with early C15 pointed window with 3 flattened ogee headed lights, panel tracery and hood mould. North side with early C14 pointed window with Y tracery. C14 doorway to left with pointed head, continuous moulded surround, hood mould and plank door. 2 early C16 rectangular windows beyond, each with 3 cusped lights, panel tracery and hood moulds. Beneath one of these windows are 2 medieval stone coffins, one with lid. East end of aisle with C19 pointed window with 3 cusped ogee headed lights, panel tracery and hood mould. C14 human corbel set above. Clerestory with 4 plain, rectangular windows with leaded lights. North side of chancel with pointed outline of blocked archway leading to demolished chapel. Small early C14 piscina to left with pointed cusped head. East end flanked by 2 stage angle buttresses and with a large pointed C19 window with 4 pointed cusped lights, panel tracery and hood mould. South side of chancel with another pointed outline of a blocked archway leading to demolished chapel. East end of south aisle with pointed C19 window with 3 cusped, ogee headed lights and hood mould. South side with 2 C14 rectangular windows each with 3 plain ogee headed lights and hood mould. Gabled late C14 porch to left with pointed, double chamfered doorway with polygonal jambs and hood mould. Inner doorway of c.1200 with pointed chamfered head, chamfered jambs with moulded imposts and plank door. Flanking stone benches. Late C13 pointed window to left of porch with Y tracery. West end of south aisle with C15 pointed window with 3 ogee headed, cusped lights, panel tracery and hood mould. Clerestory with 4 plain, rectangular windows with leaded lights. C14 interior tower arch with pointed double chamfered head dying into rectangular jambs. Mid C14 north and south arcades, with the single bays to the west being narrower, and the north-west respond of c.1300 with filleted triple roll. Remainder of piers and responds octagonal and polygonal respectively, and all with pointed, double chamfered heads, hood moulds and head label stops on north arcade. Chancel arch restored in C19, with pointed, double chamfered head, polygonal responds and moulded capitals. C15 chancel screen with single light semi-circular headed divisions with ornate ogee arches over and slender buttresses. C19 communion rail, reredos, pews and choir stalls. Early C16 queen post roofs with multiple braces. Gable of original nave roof line above tower arch with C18 hatchment. Early C13 drum font with trefoil headed arcade supported on slender jambs with moulded capitals and fleur-de-lys in spandrels; below capitals of original pedestal including human heads. C14 octagonal pedestal below. Late C17 pulpit with recessed panelled pedestal, pulpit itself decorated with stylised dragons, plain brackets and moulded panels above with flanking fluted columns to each side, which support fretwork frieze with grotesque heads, thistles and berries; 2 brackets support book rest with strapwork ornament.
