Description

SALTFLEETBY ST.PETER CHARLES GATE ROAD TF 48 NW (east side) 9/54 West tower of former Church of 9.3.67 St. Peter I West tower of church now destroyed. Late C15, C20. Limestone ashlar, coursed greenstone rubble, some red brick. 3 stage tower with 4 stage angle buttresses with multiple set-offs. West front with pointed doorway with richly moulded head with fragmentary hood mould blocked with red brick. Moulded string course above and large pointed window with 4 pointed cusped lights, rich vertical tracery, bowtell moulded surround and hood mould. Moulded string course. Bell openings on west, north and south sides, each with pointed head, 2 cusped round headed lights, panel tracery and bowtell moulded surround. Moulded eaves above. North side much rebuilt in C20 greenstone with narrow, deeply splayed rectangular window with chamfered surround and plaque to Mark Stubbs, died 1977, who left money to ensure tower's future maintenance. East side with pointed tower arch with moulded imposts and blocked with red brick. Moulded roof line of original nave gable above. Polygonal south-east stair turret, patched in C20 greenstone, with 3 stage buttress to south west and 2 C15 slit lights. C15 doorway in north side of stair turret with large stone lintel and plain jambs. Interior east tower arch with pointed double chamfered head, plain moulded capitals and double chamfered jambs.
