Description

SAUSTHORPE SKEGNESS ROAD TF 36 NE (north side) 7/56 The Old Hall 3.2.67 G.V. II* House. Late C15 with C16 and late C18 alterations. Render over red brick with remains of timber frame. Slate roof. Single ridge stacks to the outer projecting bays. Probably originally a hall house. 2 storeys, 7 bays. The outer 2 bays on each side project and are gabled. Central doorway with panelled door and decorative fanlight. Either side are single reeded pilasters supporting consoles and later projecting hood further supported on 2 piers. Either side are 3 glazing bar sashes with 7 similar sashes above, those to the central 3 bays of the first floor are under segmental arches. Interior. Re-used C17 panelling to entrance hall with scratched date of 1711 with some carved panels and Ionic pilasters. Fireplace with- C16 bressumer part blocking former larger brick and stone fireplace. 2 further inglenook fireplaces in the hall and in the music room, the latter with broach stops to chamfered beam. Dog leg staircase with C18 turned balusters. Some first floor rooms with late C18 fitted grates. Many C17 and C18 panelled doors, some with butterfly or L-H hinges, one with cock's-head hinges. 3 posts visible on the ground floor. First floor room to right of the doorway with several large posts, tie beams and curved braces. Further room with bolection fireplace. Cupboard with fielded panels, fluted pilasters and key block.
