Description
HUNDLEBY CHURCH LANE TF 36 NE (north side) 2/19 Church of St. Mary (formerly listed under 3.2.67 Main Street) II Parish church. Reused C14 stonework, C15 and rebuilding 1854-5. Squared greenstone rubble, ashlar dressings, lead and slate roofs. Western tower, clerestoried nave, north aisle, chancel, south porch, vestry. 3 stage tower with plinth, chamfered string course, battlemented parapet, corner crocketed reused C14 pinnacles, corner buttresses. To the belfry stage are 3 light C19 lights with panel tracery. On the sides are single reused ogee headed lights. The C19 west door is ogee headed with above a tall 3 light C15 window in hollow chamfered surround. C19 2 light pointed west window to north aisle with geometric style tracery. On the north side 2 C19 3 light Perpendicular windows, one with segmental head. To the clerestorey 3 C19 2 light windows also with Perpendicular tracery. Plain parapet with moulded coping. Pent roofed vestry with tall facetted ashlar stack. Segmental headed doorway and 2 ogee headed lancets. In the chancel a 2 light north window matching the clerestory and in the east a 4 light C19 Perpendicular window and a small quatrefoil window in the gable. On the south a window matching that to the north. In the south nave wall a further ogee lancet. The clerestory matches that to the north. Steeply gabled C19 south porch with a chamfered pointed outer arch with keeled and filleted responds. Continuously moulded pointed inner door. Side benches and ribs to vault. Interior. 3 bay early C15 north nave arcade with octagonal piers and capitals, bell moulded bases and double chamfered pointed arches. Tall C15 tower arch, 2 chamfered orders with octagonal imposts. Chancel arch has C15 chamfered responds and imposts with C19 double chamfered arch. At the east end of the north aisle a C19 trefoil headed doorway to the vestry. On the north side of the chancel arch the remains of the stairway to the rood loft and above, the rood doorway. In the chancel north wall a C19 4 centred moulded archway with imposts to the organ chamber. Fine C19 hammer beam roof on stone corbels. Fittings. C19 ashlar pulpit with reading stand decorated with apples and quatrefoils. 2 commandment boards in chancel. C19 pews. Fine early C17 facetted gablet font with swept panelled wooden cover with egg and dart moulding and acorn knop. Listing NGR: TF3892066526
