Description

GRIMOLDBY AND MANBY CHURCH LANE TF 38 NE (south side) 8/20 Church of St. Mary 9.3.67 II* Parish church. C15, 1889 by Sir Arthur Blomfield. Greenstone coursed rubble, some ironstone rubble, limestone rubble and ashlar. Slate roofs with stone coped gables and cross finials. West tower, nave with north porch, chancel. Late C15 west tower with plinth and 6 stage angle buttresses. West doorway with triangular head, moulded surround in one, plank door with pointed tracery. Pointed C15 window above with 3 pointed, cusped lights, panel tracery and hood mould running into string course. Pointed opening above with 2 cusped, ogee headed lights with quatrefoil. Slit stair lights to south. Bell openings on all 4 sides with bowtell moulded surrounds, 2 cusped, ogee headed lights, quatrefoil and hood mould. Moulded eaves with corner gargoyles. Battlements above and corner pinnacles. Plinth and moulded string course run round nave and chancel. North side of nave with C19 gabled porch with pointed doorway with head and jambs moulded in one and hood mould. C15 inner doorway with triangular head, richly moulded surround in one and plank door. 2 large C15 windows to east of porch, both with four centred heads, 3 cusped. pointed lights, panel tracery and hood mould. C19 chancel with pointed window to east with 2 cusped pointed lights, panel tracery and hood mould. East end with pointed head, 3 cusped, ogee headed lights, complex tracery design and hood mould. South side of chancel with pointed window to east with 2 pointed, cusped lights, panel tracery and hood mould. South side of nave with 2 large C15 windows with four centred heads, 3 cusped, pointed lights, panel tracery and hood mould. Blocked doorway to west with triangular head and bowtell moulded surround in one. C15 interior tower arch with double cavetto moulded head and jambs in one. Tower interior with small staircase doorway with flattened triangular head, cavetto moulded surround and plank door. Pointed double chamfered chancel arch with head and jambs moulded in one. Doorway in north wall of nave near chancel arch, leading to steps within wall, with upper rectangular opening originally giving access to rood loft, now gone. Large blocked, pointed opening in chancel to north, with double chamfered head dying into rectangular jambs. Small C19 piscina with corbelled bowl and pointed head in south wall of chancel. 2 late C18 gravestones to the Welfitt family, re-set in south wall of chancel. Small C14 cross head re-set by north-east respond of chancel arch. Fine Anglo-Saxon fragmentary slab, approximately 26 x 19 inches with cable decoration round edge andrich, finely preserved interlace. C15 octagonal font re-decorated in C19, with square plinth, octagonal panelled pedestal, crude faces on lower side of octagonal bowl, panels of bowl with C19 geometric flower head decoration. C19 tie-beam roofs with cusped queen posts. C19 and C20 pews, choir stalls and altar rail. C19 pulpit in C17 style. Listing NGR: TF3992086646
