TF 39 SW LITTLE GRIMSBY 7/31 Little Grimsby Hall 9.9.67 I Small country house. c.1700 with minor C19 addition of billiard room. Red brick with orange brick quoins, window reveals and heads, painted stone dressings. Deeply hipped plain tiled roof, 2 wall stacks. 2 storey with attics 7 bay front arranged 2:3:2, the central 3 bays being slightly advanced. Plinth, moulded first floor band, moulded and dentillated wooden eaves cornice. Central 8 panelled door up 4 steps, with bolection moulded stone surround and fluted brackets supporting a broken scrolled pediment with plain terminals, flanked by 3 tall glazing bar sashes. To first floor are 7 similar windows. All windows have segmental brick heads with keyblocks. To roof are 3 dormers, the central one having segmental pediment, the others triangular, all with glazing bar sashes. Interior. Front left hand room has dentillated cornice, fireplace with roccoco surround and ornate mantle, flanked by semi-circular headed niches. Full height deeply moulded panelling. The entrance hall has full height polished panelling with Doric pilasters and triglyph friezes to each of the 4 sides. The floor is stone flagged, diamond set. The staircase, a broad dogleg, has 3 knopped balusters to the tread comprising a central fluted baluster, flanked by twisted balusters. The moulded handrail is ramped and terminates on a fluted newel. The open string has elaborately carved panels and the stair has dado panelling. The first floor has a central drawing room with full height panelling and fine roccoco plaster ceiling. All first floor bedrooms have full height panelling. The house was almost certainly built for Captain John Nelthorpe, and the Ross Papers mention that Little Grimsby Hall was built during Queen Anne's reign. Source: Ross Papers Vol VI.
