Description
In the entry for:- WILLOUGHBY SLOOTHBY ROAD WITH SLOOTHBY (South side) 1/63 Hogsbeck House The list description should be amended to read:- House, now divided into 2 houses. 1796. Red brick in Flemish bond, concrete tile roof with ashlar kneelers, 2 brick gable stacks. Double depth central entrance plan; Three storey, three bay front, plinth, first floor band. Central 8 panel door covered by a possibly later Doric fluted porch, with flathood, ribbed head, flanked by tripartite glazing bar sashes with segmental ribbed brick heads. To first floor similar window to left, one to right with raised cill and plain casements, flank a tall narrow semi-circular headed stair window with 21 panes. Above is a datestone "GW1796" and two shorter tripartite glazing bar sashes. Rear elevation - retains only one original window and two first floor openings have been blocked. Interior: Divided in two c1950 but with minimal damage. Central deep stairhall with full height stack baluster stair rising from the back through to the front via a bridge at first floor level. All joinery complete with 6 panel doors etc. All original fire grates survive except for the main ground floor rooms and there is a Victorian iron range in the back kitchen. There is a remarkable room running the depth of the house on the first floor. Apart from the grates this room remained unplastered until c1950. It seems that it may have been intended for a specialised use to which it was never put eg hunt or shooting breakfasts and this might explain the unusually high standard of finish for this house.
