BOSTON TF3342 LONDON ROAD 716-1/14/283 (South East side) 07/02/97 No.126 II House, now offices. 1884-86, extended mid C20. Built for W H Wheeler, and designed and built by Samuel Sherwin. Red brick with red and blue brick dressings and slate roofs. Tall brick decorative chimney stacks. Chamfered brick plinth and moulded brick eaves cornice. Main street front has 2 storey range to left with 3 storey cross wing to right. Left range has five windows arranged 3:1:1. Off-centre projecting 2 storey porch has lean-to roof and 4-centre arched doorway with brick hood mould, above small casement window with segmental head and projecting lintel supported on brick brackets. To left single casements to both floors with similar projecting lintels. To right central window in raised brick surround topped by pediment bearing the date 1885, either side single 3-light cross casements, segment headed with projecting lintels supported on brackets. Above single small central window flanked by single larger windows all with similar projecting lintels. Beyond to left single storey addition in similar style with flat roof. Cross wing to right has projecting 3-light cross casement with segment head under projecting lean-to roof supported on wooden brackets. Above single tall casement with segment head and cill and lintel bands. Half-hipped gable has moulded brick cornice and smaller single casement window. Right return has single canted bay window with casement windows and above single casement window with segmental head. INTERIOR: retains good quality Victorian fixtures, including door frames, doors, coving, fireplaces and shutters throughout. Especially fine interiors include: Porch has unusual embossed tiles. Hall has carved dado panelling with inset pictorial tiles, fireplace has wooden surround also with tiles and inset carved wooden relief panels. Carved wooden door surrounds. Wooden staircase has square balusters with fretwork panels, moulded hand rail and square fluted newels topped by ball finials. At first landing large stained glass window. Library or study has ornate wooden panelling and fitted shelves, seats and cupboards plus panelled wooden ceiling and elaborate door surrounds. Wooden fire surround has grotesque carved animals and pictorial glazed tiles. It includes pieces of C17 wooden carving. Dining Room has panelling with 26 carved wooden relief panels below cornice all with wheel subjects. Fitted side board with very elaborate wooden panels and fireplace with carved wooden surround.
